What it is
Four pillars, five elements.
Most people know their year animal. That is one of four: the tradition assigns an animal and an element to the year, month, day and hour of birth, and the day pillar is generally taken as the one that describes you most directly. The year animal, the famous one, says more about your generation than about you.
The reading works from the balance between the five elements across those pillars, wood, fire, earth, metal and water. An excess or an absence is the interesting part. It produces a noticeably different portrait from a Western chart, which is the reason to have both rather than a reason to pick one.
