The same sky, measured differently.
Jyotish uses the sidereal zodiac, fixed against the actual constellations. Your placements will often differ from your Western chart by a whole sign, and its timing system is the most detailed of any tradition I read.
What it is
Why your sign may change.
Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, anchored to the seasons. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, anchored to the stars themselves. Because the Earth wobbles slowly on its axis, the two have drifted about twenty-four degrees apart, which is nearly a full sign. Most people find their Sun sign moves back one place.
This surprises people, and it is worth stating plainly: neither zodiac is the wrong one. They measure from different starting points and were built to answer different questions. If you have read both charts and they disagree, that is the expected result, not an error.
What Jyotish brings that Western astrology does not is the dasha system, a scheme of planetary periods lasting years at a time that says which planet is governing the current chapter of your life. It is the most structured approach to timing in any tradition I work with.
What you get
Sidereal chart, nakshatra, current period.
- Your sidereal placements, and a clear note on how they differ from the Western chart you may already know.
- Your Moon nakshatra, the lunar mansion, which Jyotish treats as central to temperament.
- The dasha period you are currently in, when it started and when it ends.
- What that period traditionally emphasises, and where it sits in the longer sequence.
- The chart’s main life themes, read in the Jyotish idiom but explained in ordinary English.
What I need
Date, time and place.
What I need from you
- Your birth date.
- Your birth time, as exact as you can get it. Your birth certificate is the reliable source; a hospital record or a parent’s memory of the hour is usually close enough.
- The city and state or country where you were born.
If you don’t know your birth time, say so on the form. I can still read the chart, but the houses and the rising sign are unreliable without it, and I will tell you which parts of the reading that affects rather than quietly guessing.
Honest limits
What this will not do.
- It will not predict marriage, death, litigation or wealth, which classical texts are often asked for and which I do not offer.
- I read Jyotish as one tradition among several. I am not a Vedic specialist and will not present myself as one.
- Remedial measures, gemstones and ritual prescriptions are outside what I do.
- Expect it to contradict your Western chart in places. That is the system working, not failing.
